Reading and lecture on the work of Mathias Énard.
The renowned French author and Goncourt Prize winner Mathias Enard is a connoisseur and expert of border crossings.
A graduate in Oriental studies, he has already demonstrated this impressively many times in his literary works: In his novel Zone (Engl.: 2010, French: 2008), for example, Enard spans the violent history of the entire Mediterranean region in a single sentence in the memoirs of a French secret agent. The Perfect Shot (Engl.: 2023, French: La perfection du tir, 2003) tells the story of war and the brutal border between life and death from the perspective of a sniper in a very unique way, while in Tell them about battles, kings and elephants (Engl.: 2011, French: Parle-leur de batailles, de rois et d'éléphants, 2010), the reader joins Michelangelo in building a bridge over the Golden Horn between the European and Asian continents. In Kompass (Eng.: 2016, French: Boussole, 2015), a musicologist recalls his research trips to the Orient during a sleepless night and in this novel, he ventures into the border areas between Orient and Occident, science and novel, love and despair. And finally, in his latest text, Tanz des Verrats (German: 2024, French: Déserter, 2023), two stories, that of a nameless deserter somewhere in the Mediterranean and that of a GDR mathematician, stand side by side in a fascinating way. The lecture takes you on a journey into the work of Mathias Enard: into his narrative worlds between Orient and Occident and into his fascinating narrative style.
