She's eating again. That used to be different. Growing up in poverty, alone with her compulsively thin mother, who migrated to Berlin from Ukraine, her future seemed preprogrammed. Now, in her late twenties, she has it halfway under control. She jogs a lot, yes, she counts every calorie, okay, but she - almost - always feeds her body in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening. Even though she weighs up every penny that the food and its preparation costs her. Only very rarely does she succumb to her old habits of eating too much and then throwing up. But it is still progress. And then there is a date that gives her hope of a better life, of finally breaking out of the vicious circle. Or is it?

In Halbe Portion, Elisabeth Pape tells a very personal story about eating disorders, growing up in poverty and the constraints that come with it. The novel shows why it is so difficult for those affected to break with learned structures and find a healthy approach to food and money. And it explores the question of how family supports us, but also crushes us. A touching debut about a merciless illness and its tragicomic moments.

Elisabeth Pape, born in 1995, daughter of a Ukrainian immigrant, studied theater and literature at the Free University of Berlin and then scenic writing at the Berlin University of the Arts. She was awarded the Kleist Prize 2023 and received the Leonhard Frank Scholarship 2023, which is awarded by the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg. Her plays have premiered at the Staatstheater Augsburg, Theater Koblenz and Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, among others. Halbe Portion is her debut novel.
