Luise Meier presents her novel "Hyphen" in a moderated short reading. Sunday, July 27 at 5 pm at Zollinlandplatz on the Zolli Stage.

HYPHEN (Semi-utopian Speculative Near Future Social Fiction)

When the power finally goes out worldwide in 2027, there is no panic and chaos, contrary to expectations. Power grids and supply chains, money flows and the internet collapse, but this does not mean the end of civilization. Instead, the people in Luise Meier's multifaceted novel Hyphen begin a search, born out of necessity, for other ways of relating to each other that enable them to survive and care for each other. There is Anne, for example, who tries to keep the hospital running, her fifteen-year-old son Tomasz, who suddenly sees nature with different eyes, or Maja, who keeps a record of all this for the ever-growing encyclopaedia that spans the globe.

Like mushroom threads, Luise Meier lays out biographies, experiences, dreams and wishes, interweaves them with unrealized futures and reveals: The world is not coming to an end - rather, it is emerging anew, in radical, all-encompassing connectedness.

Luise Meier, born in East Berlin in 1985, works as a freelance author, theater maker and service worker. She studied philosophy, social and cultural anthropology and cultural studies in Berlin, Frankfurt/Oder and Aarhus. Her essay MRX Maschine was published by Matthes & Seitz in 2018. Hyphen (Matthes & Seitz 2024) is her first novel.
