Having a daughter in Afghanistan bodes ill, because girls mean sorrow and worry. Mahbuba's father had seven daughters and welcomed each one with joy. Mahbuba was therefore spared the fate of thousands of Afghan girls: her parents did not sell her and she was able to choose her own husband - but in traditional society, self-confident women are not welcome. When her sister is shot dead by a mujahideen, everything begins to unravel and Mahbuba leaves her country.

You are invited to discover the life story of an Afghan woman brought up as a Muslim, an extraordinary woman shaped by Afghan, Russian and German culture.

Mahbuba Maqsoodi was born in a village near Herat in Afghanistan. She worked as a secondary school teacher and was politically active from an early age. An art scholarship took her and her husband, the artist Fazl Maqsoodi, to Leningrad. The civil war prevented her return after completing her studies, and she and her family were granted political asylum in Germany. Mahbuba has been working as an artist in Munich since 1996.

The reading will be accompanied by music and film excerpts. Afterwards, the artist will be available to answer questions from the audience.
