Lesung mit Henning Sußebach: 'Anna oder: Was von einem Leben bleibt'

In his new book, Henning Sußebach writes about the life of his great-grandmother - about a woman far before her time, deep in the Sauerland. We are delighted that the journalist and author from the Ruhr region will be presenting and reading from his book 'Anna oder: Was von einem Leben bleibt' in September. He will also be showing pictures on our big screen during the reading.

1887, deep in the Sauerland. A young woman comes up the path to the village of Cobbenrode. Anna Kalthoff is to become the new teacher there. But she will not stay there. Anna soon defies the expectations of the village and the rules of her time. She decides for herself what to do and what not to do, how she wants to live and who she wants to love. Two centuries later, Anna's great-grandson reconstructs her inspiring life and saves the story of a self-confident woman from oblivion. His book is a magical approach to our ancestors, without whose decisions and courage we would not exist.

A few photos, poetry albums, postcards, a coffee service, an engagement ring: Henning Sußebach didn't have much else at his disposal when he set out on the trail of his great-grandmother Anna. After a year of searching, a picture emerged: a seemingly ordinary woman had led an extraordinary life, against all odds. Anna took what she wanted from life. Men, work, freedom! The author owes his existence to this will. His book encourages us all to look for the Annas that exist in every family history. (C.H.Beck)

Henning Sußebach, born in 1972, is editor of the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT. He has been awarded some of the most important German journalism prizes for his reporting, including the German Reporter Prize, the Theodor Wolff Prize, the Henri Nannen Prize and the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize.
