A poetic-musical journey through time to the Japanese imperial court in the year 1000

Over a millennium old, the Pillow Book is one of the most fascinating literary testimonies we possess. It was written around 1000 CE by Sei Shonagon, a lady-in-waiting to the Japanese empress. In more than 300 short texts, some aphoristic, some essayistic, the highly educated author describes life at court. It is not only her gift for observation combined with wit that elevates this collection of texts to the status of world literature, but above all the passages in which the author critically reflects on her own observations. Shonagon always keeps up appearances - the author was aware of the power games at court, of which she may have been a victim - but repeatedly reveals insights into human interaction that seem surprisingly contemporary. The evening finds its musical counterpart in the unusual sounds of the koto, the 13-stringed arched-board zither with its ethereal, dreamy sounds, which was already mentioned in the tenth century. Excerpts from the pillow book will be read by the well-known actress Michaela Steiger. Japanese musician Naoko Kikuchi, whose repertoire includes classical solo and chamber music compositions as well as contemporary music and improvisation, will be playing the koto.
