Germany in the fall of 1938: While the Sudeten crisis increases the fear of a new world war, the Rath couple has to struggle with adverse circumstances: After his return from the USA, Gereon has found incognito shelter with the Adenauer family in Rhöndorf in order to be close to his dying father, while Charlotte is waiting in Berlin to be able to go abroad with her husband. The two meet secretly every few weeks under false names in a cheap hotel in Hanover, where nobody knows them because nobody is allowed to find out that Gereon Rath survived the shooting on the Schöneberg Bridge.

Meanwhile, the German government takes increasingly brutal action against the Jews, the hatred of Jews grows, and on November 9th, a development culminates in brutal pogroms throughout the Reich that Charly had foreseen and Gereon had long denied. It is clear to both of them: life in Germany is no longer possible, resistance is necessary. Do they have a common future and where would it lie?
