It's getting cozy at Juicy! We are delighted that Beate Absalon will be visiting us and reading from her book "Not giving a fuck. Von lustlosem Sex und sexloser Lust" and invites us to a discussion.
The event starts at 6:30pm and you can just come along, registration is not necessary. The book can be bought on site.
What is the book about?
A collective turn-off is going around. According to statistics, we are having less and less sex, there are rumors that Generation Z is prudish, feminist voices are voicing their disappointment with sex positivity, and more and more people are reporting finding happiness or rebellion in voluntary abstinence. How to categorize all this? Is it conservative or progressive? Is it repression and loss or is it a way out and a new beginning? After all, who actually decides what sex is?
Beate Absalon takes a culturally and historically informed look at the pleasure and consumption-oriented significance of sex, which makes it a project that absolutely has to succeed for us to be considered successful. It's no wonder that pleasure is lost. The supposed failure of "successful sex" can therefore be a blessing. Unwillingness, asexuality, celibacy or dysfunctions refuse to obey the sexual duty of service and open up very stubbornly pleasurable scope. It will go beautifully wrong.
Fancy a reading sample?
Beate Absalon works as a cultural scientist on contemporary sexual ethics and combines theory with practice. As part of the luhmen d'arc collective, she organizes workshops on dealing with the complexity of sexuality in a playful and embodied way. In her work, she draws attention to social contexts, ambiguities and the aesthetic qualities of intimacy. Sceptical of promises of transformation, she recognizes non-cathartic feelings (such as awkwardness, shyness, laziness, listlessness,...) as worthwhile. In May 2024, her non-fiction book "Not giving a fuck. Von lustlosem Sex und sexloser Lust: Gesellschaftlichen Zwang überwinden und lebendige Intimität finden" was published by Kremayr&Scheriau in Vienna.
