So, what or how much do you inherit? Helge Schmidt and his team work with the ensemble to develop a theatrical event about material and immaterial inheritance based on interviews with various experts.
The richest ten percent own over half of the wealth, and not just because wealth tax has been suspended since 1997. Coincidence of birth, clever to dubious distribution of capital, low tax rates for the super-rich - just some of the factors that cause the serious inequality in our society. This research project goes in search of clues: How is wealth created? At whose expense? What past is attached to wealth? While the level of citizens' income is being discussed, cultural budgets are being cut further and further and the state infrastructure is suffering, the rich are getting richer and richer. Does society need to hold the wealthy more accountable?
Director Helge Schmidt and his team are known for their documentary-style productions on burning socio-political issues, e.g. "Cum-Ex Papers - Eine Recherche zum entfesselten Finanzwesen" (Faust Prize 2019). For "Unser Erbe - Tax me if you can" they talk to various experts: Dr. Martyna Linartas (political scientist), Charlotte S. (member of the heiress network "Pecunia"), Stefanie Bremer (activist in the "taxmenow" initiative), Veronika Moos (author), Reinhard Ernst (entrepreneur and foundation founder) and Dr. Sighard Neckel (professor of sociology).

Reading for the International May Festival:
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and is going on tour with a democracy pop-up lounge. A varied program will be offered at twelve locations throughout Germany in order to get into conversation with as many people as possible about current socio-political challenges and ideas for shaping society.
The Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung have come up with a special collaboration to address the topic of wealth inequality and inheritance tax:
The play "Unser Erbe: Tax me if you can" by Helge Schmidt and team, which celebrated its world premiere at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden this season, is going on tour together with the pop-up lounge. In various cities, actors will present the reading version of the documentary research project, which was specially produced for the occasion, in the middle of the city and vividly show why the rich are getting richer and how our system promotes injustice. The play is accompanied by the "Inheritance Tax Clock", which counts how much revenue the community has lost since 2009 due to tax privileges.
In Wiesbaden, the reading version will be shown on May 24 and 25 in front of the town hall - with Wiesbaden specials, costumes from the premiere and a subsequent discussion round!
