LEYA on 30.05. at the MKM Museum Küppersmühle!
presented by Platzhirsch Festival & Stapeltor // 30.05. 19:00 h
After an incredibly beautiful concert in 2023 in the Säule, LEYA are coming to the Museum Küppersmühle this May!
LEYA (US), the avant-pop duo of harpist Marilu Donovan and singer/violinist Adam Markiewicz, has long lived in a beguiling world that blends medieval origins with modern folk, classical and more. From deep roots in the NYC underground to international recognition as a crossover force, her work has found its way into realms ranging from fashion runways to Pornhub and beyond.
The foundation of LEYA is the unique vocal system of the harp that Donovan designed for the project, which combines with Markiewicz's distinctly broad, operatic vocal palette and further blends with his processed violin tones. The template for this sound can be found on their 2018 debut "The Fool" and was further developed on their groundbreaking 2020 follow-up "Flood Dream". The New York Times called it "the auditory equivalent of waking up in the fog of a bad dream, only to realize you're still trapped in the nightmare." This sense of unease has become a signature sound of the project, a collision of beauty and misfortune that both soothes and disturbs listeners.
Recursion is an art and sound collective Recursion from Duisburg. They are old friends of the Platzhirsch Festival. They are the only band in the world to have played with us two years in a row (2022, 2023).
Sometimes the collective is reminiscent of Einstürzende Neubauten, then they whisk their audience away into hypnotic spheres of floating synth carpets, surprising them time and again with unexpected sound effects.
They attracted particular attention in 2023 as improvisers in residence at the Moers Festival with superbly curated events, their own concerts with a wide variety of artists and anarchistic guerrilla performances.
