Lieblingsklassiker: Märchenhafte Weihnachten

Christmas time - fairytale time. When Engelbert Humperdinck set a few verses to music for a family performance of his sister's fairytale play, he had no idea what a formative success his opera would one day have. The story of "Hansel and Gretel" gives courage in the dark season. Giacomo Puccini's "Bohème" takes us into the colorful hustle and bustle of the Parisian Christmas market before we travel with Klara and the Nutcracker through wild snow flurries into the realm of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Finally, in Rimsky-Korsakov's "Night before Christmas", we experience surreal and fantastical encounters, such as the rendezvous between the devil and the witch or the flight of brooms and pitchforks. Nikolai Gogol's tale fascinated the composer because of its mixture of pagan and Christian customs and inspired him to create new and stirring timbres.

All the works are performed here as "Harmoniemusik": reduced to a wind ensemble and without singers, this tradition has been a popular way of performing opera music as chamber music since the 18th century.
