ligeti zentrum @ blurred edges: Lukas Ligeti & TonArt Ensemble

In the organizer's words:

Composer and percussionist Lukas Ligeti has forged a fiercely independent path at the forefront of new music, creating strikingly original works that are aware of a variety of traditions but do not belong to any of the familiar currents or groupings of contemporary music. At the intersection of contemporary composition, downtown New York experimentalism, jazz and electronics, his work draws heavily on concepts from various musical traditions from around the world, particularly Africa. His music is often characterized by complex polymetric structures and ranges from the through-composed to the freely improvised. He is intensively involved in the field of "experimental intercultural collaboration", a term he coined.

Lukas Ligeti, born in Austria, lived mainly in New York City from 1998 to 2015 and then in Southern California, where he was a faculty member of the PhD program "Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology" at the University of California, Irvine. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria and divides his time between Miami and Johannesburg and more recently as Professor of Composition at the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels.

The Hamburg-based TonArt Ensemble is known for innovative concerts with a focus on contemporary music and improvisation. It collaborates with various international artists, crossing boundaries between musical genres, visual arts, literature, dance and film to offer audiences experiences outside their usual listening expectations.

The concert takes place as part of the blurred edges festival of the Hamburg Association for Contemporary Music.
