Sonic Pluriverse Festival: Terapia - Lindigo, Margareth Menezes, Grace Kelly

In the organizer's words:

Lindigo

The band Lindigo has set itself the task of celebrating Maloya and bringing this music from La Réunion to a new generation and a global audience. Maloya is derived from the Malagasy term maloy aho, which means "to speak". Alongside séga, the genre is a living symbol of Creole culture on La Réunion, characterized by shrill shouts, sung responses and complex percussion rhythms that originally came from enslaved people who were forced to work on sugar plantations. As the music and the associated dance were increasingly perceived as an expression of resistance, the French colonial administration temporarily imposed a ban.

For generations, Maloya served as a celebration of the ancestors and evolved by adopting influences from poetry, rock, reggae and jazz; the practice gained new relevance by combining electronic music with traditional instruments such as the roulèr, kayamb, pikèr and sati or triangle. Lindigo also refer to percussion practices with roots in India, Madagascar and other African countries. They integrate instruments such as the Madagascan Kabosy and the West African Kamele Ngoni into their performances as well as inspiration from their stays in Morocco and Brazil.

Margareth Menezes

Margareth Menezes began her artistic career as a teenager, performing in school theater groups. In 1987, she was invited by Djalma Oliveira to make a guest appearance: Together, the two interpreted the first samba reggae recorded in Brazil - "Faraó-Divindade do Egito", a song by Luciano Gomes, sold over 100,000 copies. Following the success of her debut single, Menezes signed a recording contract and released her first album in 1988.

Menezes combines African and Brazilian influences with pop elements in her music, making an important contribution to Brazilian Afropop. She is widely revered for her central role in the worldwide popularization of Bahian music and celebrated for her mastery of axé, samba reggae and Bahian samba funk. In addition to her work as a musician, she has also held the office of Brazilian Minister of Culture since the beginning of 2023.
