»L'invisible« von Aribert Reimann

Aribert Reimann's opera L'invisible combines three plays by Maurice Maeterlinck into a poetic reflection on the power of death: L'intruse shows a mother struggling to survive in childbed. While most of her relatives fail to recognize the gravity of the situation, only the blind grandfather notices the arrival of an invisible stranger. Intérieur is based on the suicide of a young woman. Two men are told to inform the family of the deceased and ask themselves whether it would not be more humane to conceal the bitter truth. La mort de Tintagiles is reminiscent of a dark fairy tale: An old queen lures her grandson Tintagiles into her kingdom to have him murdered as her potential heir to the throne. Supported by his sisters, Tintagiles is initially able to defend himself. But eventually he too disappears into his grandmother's mysterious castle.
