the Große Kiesau Literature Night attracts literature lovers
literature lovers from near and far.

Are we at a tipping point in social development? We have a democracy crisis, a climate crisis and an inequality crisis. Polarization in our country is increasing unchecked; established rules and value systems are slipping and climate targets appear to be a distant mirage. This raises the enduring question: are liberal democracies capable of overcoming the challenges of the present? They formally account for 45.7% of the world's population, while only 7.8% live in a "full democracy" and are in strong competition with other political and autocratic social systems.

Literature can open up imaginative spaces; literature can sharpen our view of the world in a differentiated way, beyond the clichés and trite language of political statements.

On the eve of the 2025 federal elections, "Democracy and Discourse" is intended to be an artistically reflective, discursive evening that gives hard-won values such as humanism, tolerance and social responsibility a vital and literary significance in readings and discussions in the old town houses, against the constant erosion in an urban society. An event that communicatively promotes the private autonomy of the individual as well as their public participation in political society and refuses to be a projection surface for hatred, mutual discrediting, "cancel culture" and pathologizing.

On February 22, 2025, 16 authors and actors will read and discuss in 16 private homes in Lübeck's old town. The 19th Literature Night 2025 is also supported by the association "Große Kiesau Literaturnacht e.V." and the artistic direction of Reinhard Göber.
