Art in public space - six posters for Dortmund
From mid-May 2025, six large posters will be on display in Dortmund's city center for two weeks - distributed at selected locations. But unlike ordinary advertising posters, these do not advertise products, services or events. At first glance, they look like advertising - with photographic motifs and typography - but elude any clear message and remain enigmatic.
What is striking is that each motif is surprisingly related to its specific location. In this way, attention is specifically drawn to the respective location. While advertising posters are usually viewed independently of their surroundings, these artistically designed posters take precisely these surroundings as their subject - and make them visible.
The participating artists have each chosen a specific billboard in the city center and developed an individual motif for it:
Debora Ando @ando_debora
- Stadthaus S-Bahn station
Janna Banning @janna_banning
- Hohestraße 28 a
Renate Frerich
- Prinzenstraße / Wißstraße 34
Hans Ostapenko @hansostapenko
- Bornstraße 160 a
Philip Michael @lip.71_
- Treibstraße 27
Jens Sundheim @jens_sundheim
- Unionstraße / Treibstraße
The result is irritating visual worlds and poetic texts that do not provide quick answers, but raise questions - about the places, their history and our perception. The combination of motif and surroundings creates a new perspective on familiar places. The posters invite us to pause, observe and engage with a different perspective.
Tour on Thursday, May 15, at 6 pm.
