Longings and Belongings

In the organizer's words:

New series of events about longings and belonging - on March 23, 2025 - Schauspielhaus, Kleines Haus

Everyday life in our post-migrant society is characterized by longings and questions about belonging. Who is heard, what is seen, whose stories are told? In our new event series "Longings and Belongings", we want to hear, see, discuss and make plural, multi-layered and intersectional realities tangible.

In March , we will start with a reading and discussion with bestselling author Alice Hasters and her book "Identity Crisis".
"Are the 90s back?", we ask ourselves at a panel discussion in April and discuss the perspectives of activism and journalism. In this issue, we also show excerpts from the theatrical bus tour "Solingen 1993", which was awarded the German Theater Prize "Der Faust".
In May , the focus will be on the history of jazz and its current reception in the music and art scene in Europe and Germany. How has jazz, which is rooted in African-American culture, developed? Does it have the potential to bridge the gap between so-called high culture and subculture? Is the scene exclusive or does it still offer room for experimentation?
And what do all these questions have to do with our society and the art scene? The new series is curated by Dîlan Kılıç, Diversity Officer at D'haus.

Alice Hasters reads from "Identity Crisis"

Reading and discussion - on March 23 at 6 pm

The terms of our time are crisis and identity. In the book "Identity Crisis" by bestselling author Alice Hasters, it says: "We are climate-conscious. We have a culture of remembrance. Freedom and peace are Western virtues. That's what we tell ourselves about ourselves and about the society we live in. But this story isn't quite true, is it? We buy clothes made in sweatshops, we shy away from our family history, and right-wing radicalism and police violence are rampant in our society. Our self-narrative doesn't match reality. So it is no wonder that we are in an identity crisis. It is time to face up to this identity crisis and find out who we really are. Because this is the only way people and societies can change."
