low key orchestra. You can't get more understatement in a band name. Sönke Torpus has found the most inappropriate - and therefore most fitting - name for something that, without wanting to exaggerate, is musically truly great.
But let's start from the beginning. low key orchestra is the new band project of the aforementioned. All indie folk connoisseurs among us will be familiar with his former band Torpus & the Art Directors and will have fond memories of it, and the joy written all over their faces that new music is now on the doorstep of their favorite songs.
"maybe words" was the first of several low key orchestra songs to be released this year and it is quite simply a wonderful song. Sönke has created a little anthem for all those who need an outstretched hand or an open ear. As if he had thought: "If I can't be near you, at least you'll get a chorus that's more comforting than a thousand hugs."
Maybe words can help you / Maybe lines that care
I can sense your trouble / And I feel you there
Every line speaks of sincere compassion. Together with producer Helgi Helgasson, Sönke has managed to translate an inescapable text into warm and multifaceted music. In terms of sound, the low key orchestra - especially in this country - floats very independently in a world of sound and emotion that has been influenced by bands such as Bright Eyes, Whitney and the Flaming Lips. In their songwriting, however, there are parallels to early albums by Coldplay or Keane.
Sönke says of himself that he lost the music for a long time. Fortunately for us, he has rediscovered it - or perhaps it has rediscovered him.
In October, the low key orchestra will go on tour for the first time with a full band line-up.
