What can Jan Nowak, a nurse, his father and a disabled patient expect? Life in the middle of a small town on the border with Poland. The hospital is about to close, the town is pretty dreary - in short: a place in eastern Germany in the post-reunification era. Lukas Rietzschel allows his main character to discover and unfold the connection between their world and all the unanswered questions from the past and Georg Baselitz, the painter who toppled his head, his pictorial worlds and the Nowak and Baselitz families in a multi-layered and wide-ranging way using language that is both economical and touching.
