St. Luke Passion by Andrew Smith & Passion motets by Francis Poulenc

Musical settings of the Passion of Jesus have a long and moving tradition. The dramatic narrative structure, soloist roles, the crowds represented by the choir as well as impressive arias and chorales characterize this musical genre. Against this backdrop, the Passion based on biblical texts by the evangelist Luke in English is a special feature, as it is a purely a cappella setting. The British-Norwegian composer Andrew Smith (*1970) divides the narrative texts and the characters in the story into choral and choral solo passages and is performed for the first time in English by the CONSONO chamber choir. The striking words of the British language are combined with a recurring Scandinavian melody, both for audience participation and as a basis for improvisation.

The Passion will be complemented and alternated with the famous Good Friday motets by Francis Poulenc. The "Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence" are inspired by the liturgical texts of Holy Week and are an integral part of the a cappella choral repertoire. They captivate with their profound expressivity and dramatic intensity, thus enhancing the emotional impact and providing an impressive musical contrast to the "St. Luke Passion".

The CONSONO chamber choir is one of the best chamber choirs in Germany, as confirmed by the numerous national and international choir competitions it has won. The choir specializes in contemporary and romantic a cappella choral works. CONSONO's homogeneous choral sound, the transparency of its voices and its excellent intonation have been repeatedly praised in the press as outstanding. These qualities also allow the choir to present an extraordinary concert format in this concert, which exploits the special tonal characteristics of the concert venue.
