In her artistic practice, Lulu Obermayer stages encounters with female characters from the canon. Named after a title heroine herself, the artist now confronts her namesake in her solo performance and reflects herself in the dramatic figure. Lulu is seen as a projection screen for male fantasy, people seem to agree on who Lulu is: a femme fatale who brings ruin to herself and those around her. It is claimed that Lulu acts as a mirror. But which Lulu looks back when Lulu looks in the mirror?
In order to create a more complex image of the character, the artist tracks down sources connected to Lulu and conjures up a séance-like setting, invoking her predecessors and bringing them into conversation. The monologue thus becomes a dialog. She draws on the plays "Der Erdgeist" and "Pandora's Box" by Frank Wedekind, Tilly Wedekind's autobiography "Lulu, die Rolle meines Lebens", the film "Pandora's Box" by G. W. Pabst and Louise Brooks' memoirs "Lulu in Hollywood" as well as the opera "Lulu" by Alban Berg and "Lulu unchained" by Kathy Acker.
"Everything is in motion, eerily vague. Lulu Obermayer conjures up the ghosts of the past in order to fathom her own identity and ultimately emancipate herself from the role model prescribed by name. (...) A tremendously free spirit reveals itself in the course of a densely composed, beguilingly beautiful hour." (Abendzeitung)
