Makaya McCraven

Makaya McCraven is part of a generation of jazz musicians who have grown up with hip-hop, drum'n'bass and beat music and naturally incorporate these influences into their work. Since his debut In the Moment on the Chicago label International Anthem in 2015, the drummer and self-proclaimed beat scientist has repeatedly proven himself to be a pioneering force in young American jazz - not least in his highly acclaimed Universal Beings, in which he shines as a producer, improviser, collagist, leader and composer all at once. In early 2020, We're New Again, McCraven's reinterpretation of Gil Scott-Heron's last work I'm New Here, was released on XL Records. Another consecutive release followed in 2021, when he released the remix album Deciphering The Message for Blue Note, followed in 2022 by the highly acclaimed In These Times, an extraordinary joint release between the labels Nonesuch, International Anthem and XL Recordings.
