About the event

UMSONST & DRINNEN: MANHATTAN CENTURY

Manhattan Century is an Austrian progressive metal band with a passion for storytelling. Although their heart beats for heavy music, the band incorporates a wide range of other genres to tell a continuous story across multiple albums about the struggles of an overwrought, isolated world.

Founded by brothers Alexander and Florian Artner in a small town with nothing else to do but write music, the lineup also includes prog-metal giant Ritchie Krenmaier and Michael Notter on drums.

The debut EP APE from 2022 tells the story of an early human civilization that makes contact with an omniscient entity, exploring themes such as alienation and the conflict between individualism and collectivism. The album takes the listener on an emotional journey that ranges from classical orchestration to funk and jazz to atmospheric tribal percussion, embedded in a web of crushing heavy metal riffs and tasteful solos. APE was written to be consumed in one sitting, as each song flows seamlessly into the next.

MAN from 2024 continues the story where APE ended. Songs that tell of longing for a simple life while growing up in an overwrought, overly complex world. Matching that feeling with experimental song structures that revolve around building simple themes into complicated layers, only to dissolve them back into a comprehensible resolution.
