A freely interpreted portrait of the great opera diva Maria Callas, focusing on her final days.
Paris, September 1977: Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie) has withdrawn from the public eye for years. The legendary opera diva no longer sings and lives enraptured in her huge apartment, behind heavy curtains, in a world full of memories. Only her faithful valet Ferruccio (Pierfrancesco Favino) and the cook Bruna (Alba Rohrwacher) are close to her, and both are increasingly worried about the health of their lady of the house. When the TV reporter Mandrax (Kodi Smit-McPhee) appears, Maria Callas blossoms. The interviews with the young man take Maria back to better, great, legendary times. She decides to return to the stage one last time.
Maria Callas is undisputedly the greatest diva in opera history. In MARIA, director Pablo Larraín now tells the singer's story through her own eyes as she relives her tragic life shortly before her death. The title role is played by Oscar winner Angelina Jolie ("Maleficent", "Eternals") - alongside Pierfrancesco Favino ("Adagio - Merciless City"), Alba Rohrwacher ("Between Us Life"), Haluk Bilginer ("Hibernation"), Kodi Smit-McPhee ("The Power of the Dog") and Valeria Golino ("The Morning Show"). The screenplay was written by Oscar-nominated Steven Knight ("Spencer", "Peaky Blinders - Gangs of Birmingham"). MARIA is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment, a Fremantle company. Filming took place in Paris, Greece, Budapest and Milan in 2023.
