María is the one who fled the country, the one who immigrated from Europe, the one stranded in the world of pleasure in Buenos Aires. María is the music that comes together from all of this: the guitar songs of the Argentine pampas, the dances, romances and ballads of the newcomers. María is the tango. María dies and is reborn. Just as the tango was reborn.

Astor Piazzolla, the son of a family who immigrated from Italy, was one of those who carried the tango from the subculture of Argentina into the bourgeois salons and finally into the concert halls of the world. Together with his long-time artistic partner Horacio Ferrer, he premiered the lyrical-oratorio-like tale "María de Buenos Aires" in 1968 - a tale about the love of life and freedom. The freedom sought by so many who were drawn to Buenos Aires, the freedom that was longed for and fought for in the times of military dictatorships, the freedom that is being renegotiated again today. Not only in Argentina. María moved from Buenos Aires to the world, and she is still on the move today.
