After 'Jackie' from 2016 about Jackie Kennedy and 'Spencer' from 2021 about Lady Diana, Chilean director Pablo Larrain concludes his trilogy about famous women of the 20th century with 'Maria' about Callas. In the three films, he attempts to uncover the fragile inner world behind the glamorous surface. Each time, Larrain looks through an extremely narrowed window onto a period of life in which each of the three women has to radically reassess themselves. In the case of Maria Callas, it is the last days before her early death. The world-famous singer died on September 16, 1977 at the age of just 53. The autumnal mood is combined with a life that is coming to an end and also characterizes the film. Angelina Jolie embodies the opera diva, but instead of disappearing chameleon-like behind her role, actress and role merge like two colors; sometimes one is more clearly visible, sometimes the other. The posture, the movements, everything is precisely observed and competently imitated. But Jolie doesn't even try to give the illusion of a copy of Callas. Instead, she adds something of her own, turning the film into a dialog between Maria and Angelina. Director Larrain said in an interview and it sounds respectful of his leading actress: "She trained (her voice) for seven months and learned how to breathe, how to walk, and then she practiced every piece of music. She actually sings in the movie, her voice blends with Callas' to make it as believable as possible."
