La Vacabose takes place when the party ends in intoxication. Between ecstasy, excess, drunkenness and slowness, the performers go through different states of being. They create a space to celebrate, to retreat, to unfold and transform, once and again. The sound of the Venezuelan folk dance Joropo evokes landscapes of the savannah and their inhabitants,transforming the space into a street festival where people, cows, demons and goddesses dance together. In order to heal and celebrate femininity, Maria Mercedes Flores Mujica breaks with the traditional gender-specific couple dance. Inspired by Venezuelan folk festivals, healing rituals and Egyptian mythology, the choreography becomes a form of resistance against patriarchy and capitalism.

Maria Mercedes Flores Mujica is a syncretic, inter(un)disciplinary Venezuelan dance artist based in Cologne. She questions cultural hierarchies, contemporary knowledge production and reception. In her work she explores the intersections between trans- and hyperculturality, time/space displacement and experienced physicality through the exploration of folk dances and music. Exploring auditory, visual and tactile rhythms allows her to create forms of communication that bridge the interaction between performer, audience and space. With empowerment-oriented, pleasure-driven body practices, an aesthetic of the informal and collage as a compositional practice, she creates performative ecosystems that blossom on stage and beyond. To deepen her artistic research, she received the Tanzrecherche grant from the NRWKULTURsekretariat in 2024 and was a resident artist at the K3 Choreographisches Zentrum in Hamburg.
