A conservative on the move - or on the wrong track?

The republic is nervous and divided - and it is facing increasing internal and external enemies. At a time when authoritarian regimes are gaining influence worldwide, many people are longing for a conservatism that both stabilizes the country and stands up to the authoritarians. But is the new chancellor such a conservative?
What answers will he find to the geopolitical, economic and social challenges of our time, how will he drive forward the major issues of the future that will strengthen Europe? How will Merz deal with the controversial issue of migration - in a moderating or escalating manner? And what does all this have to do with his personal career? No one can answer these questions better than Mariam Lau, who has accompanied Friedrich Merz for years as a reporter for DIE ZEIT.

Mariam Lau was born in Tehran in 1962 and grew up in Berlin. After studying American Studies in Berlin and Bloomington, Indiana, she worked for taz and Die Welt before joining the political editorial team at DIE ZEIT. She specializes in conservatism, CDU, AfD and migration policy.
