In his first graphic novel,Marius Schmidt takes up a hitherto little-known aspect of the Bay of Lübeck vacation region: The immense number of victims left their mark on the country and its people for a long time, while at the same time being repressed in the traditional seaside resorts and only receiving appropriate attention in recent years.

Aale & Gespenster tells the story of friends Casimir and Rimsky's experiences in the summer of 1947. They earn their money by illegally cannibalizing the huge wreck of the "Cap Arcona", which is still lying in the Bay of Lübeck. Anna, the daughter of the former NSDAP local group leader, persuades the two of them to take her to the wreck. An argument ensues on board the ship. Forty years later, Marianne and her daughter Anja are on vacation on the coast. They accidentally come across a skeleton in the ground at the campsite. The police calmly and routinely attribute the discovery to the shipwreck over 40 years earlier. But that is not quite the truth ...
