One was a child from the Parisian gutter, the other came from a middle-class Berlin family. One was active against the Nazis, the other was revered by them. Nevertheless, they were close friends, perhaps even more than that. Fascinated by the radicalism and consistency of these two icons, a young actress and singer tries to get behind the myths and legends. She follows the lives of the two artists in their splendor and their self-destruction, in their loves and excesses, in their successes and their failures and searches for answers in their songs - from "Ich bin die fesche Lola" to "Non, je ne regrette rien".
