The author Ismail Kadare, who was awarded the Man Booker International Prize in 2005, has been translated into forty languages. At the award ceremony, the jury described him as the "Homer of Albania". His novels and stories give readers an insight into the history and social development of Albania, which has its roots in both European and Asia Minor history.
It is also worth studying this writer because he sharpens our view of a largely unknown country that has come more into focus as a result of the discussions surrounding the accession of the countries of the southern Balkans to the EU.
