The singer Maya Kamaty raps in Creole and inspires audiences not only in her home country, the island of La Réunion, but all over the world. She is the voice of an entire generation.
Kamaty is a feminist artist whose artistic identity is deeply rooted in Creole culture. She also emphasizes this with her artist and second name "Kamaty", which symbolizes a strong and unconventional woman. Together with the producer, composer and singer Sskyron, she has created her own aesthetic from the Creole sounds of her home island in the Indian Ocean and contemporary influences, which she herself describes as "Creole Urban Pop". This new sound, a heady mix of urban, hip-hop, trap and pop, explores the idea of a certain rawness and brutality - an attitude she describes as street-creolity.
For her new album, Kamaty chose the Creole term "SOVAZ" as the title, expressing a raw, unpolished attitude of bad boys and girls who don't always say yes. At the same time, "Sovaz" is the uncensored expression of a self-confident woman and artist who has found an artistic outlet for her own anger in a racist and sexist world and has a lot of ideas about how it could be better. Played live, this album impressively demonstrates how it pushes the boundaries of contemporary Creole music.
