Twenty years ago, the relationship between the then 36-year-old Gracie and 13-year-old Joe was a scandal and a feast for the tabloids. In the meantime, the couple lead a seemingly perfect suburban life with a nice neighborhood, a well-tended garden and three almost grown-up children. But their domestic bliss is disrupted when the famous Hollywood actress Elizabeth comes to visit them to research her upcoming starring role in a movie about Gracie.
Between charged suspense and deliberate kitsch, director Todd Haynes (CAROL, I'M NOT THERE) tells an intriguing and bittersweet melodrama about questions of truth and morality - not least in the entertainment industry - in his own style. Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman lend their characters so many facets that the mood of the film constantly changes and confronts us with the question of their real intentions. Charles Melton also makes a lasting impression in some of the most touching scenes of recent years.
