Self-portraits of a life with cancer - exhibition and symposium in Berlin

August 27 & 28, 2025, Artloft Berlin Wedding

In his new solo exhibition Me, Myself & Die, Berlin-based photographer and film editor Kai Kniepkamp presents a radically personal, artistically staged photo series about life with incurable cancer. The exhibition will open on August 27, 2025 at Artloft Berlin (Wedding) and will be complemented by an interdisciplinary symposium on "Art & Cancer" the following day.

Diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma - rare, incurable, but treatable. Kai Kniepkamp has not only lived through the months of his chemotherapy medically, but also creatively: In Me, Myself & Die, he stages himself in sometimes grotesque, scenic and humorously provocative self-portraits that make the emotional chaos between mortality, hope and social stigmatization tangible. This is not a documentary chronicle, but an artistic examination of an existential experience - raw, sensitive, courageous.

The exhibition not only aims to touch people, but also to provide food for thought: Why are illness and death so rarely talked about? What role can art play in dealing with cancer? And how can we find a more open, less taboo language for the unspeakable?

The "Art & Cancer" symposium on August 28, 2025, which will take place in the exhibition space itself, seeks answers to these questions. Artists, sufferers, doctors, psycho-oncologists and other interested parties will come together to discuss taboos, therapy, artistic treatment and social responsibility. The symposium is realized in cooperation with the association Eisvogel e. V. and Artloft Berlin.
