The tragedy of Medea is one of the most famous stories of classical Greek theater. It tells the story of a woman, Medea, who leaves her family for her lover Jason, only to be rejected by him later and ultimately become the murderer of her children.
For the play sponsored by Aktion Mensch, Stefanie Miller takes the story of Medea as the basis for her theater production, in which deaf, hearing-impaired and hearing people will be on stage. Medea is deaf and comes to the world of the hearing with her great love Jason, where she is betrayed and ostracized. Then Jason also leaves her - for a hearing woman, of course - whereupon Medea develops a perfidious plan of revenge, not even stopping at her own children. A very unique sign language poetry is told on the basis of the ancient drama - understandable for both deaf and hearing people.
Miller sees her play as a stimulus to engage with deaf culture and as an example of social inclusion, in which people with and without disabilities work together artistically on a project for the stage.
Kassandra Wedel plays Medea. She is a deaf actress and dancer from Munich and was last seen at the Kammerspiele München together with Wiebke Puls. In 2016, she also won the nationwide dance competition "Deutschland tanzt" as a representative for Bavaria on ProSieben.
She performs on stage together with hearing actors and a sign language choir. The result is her very own sign language poetry based on the ancient drama.
