Meet the Berliners: Gentrifizierung in Berlin. Offenes Gespräch zur Finissage der Freifläche „Wir bleiben!” bei BERLIN GLOBAL

In the organizer's words:

Gentrification is an issue that not only affects Berlin, but is felt particularly strongly and quickly here. On the occasion of the finissage of the open space "Wir bleiben!", BERLIN GLOBAL, together with the makers of the open space Barbara Bernardi, Linda Paganelli and Vincent Voignier, invites you to an open discussion with activists, artists and other Berliners.

Rents in Berlin are rising inexorably, currently by around 17 percent a year. New-build apartments are unaffordable for many. The city's tenants are under enormous pressure. But many Berliners are not giving up the fight: Through demonstrations, self-organization and solidarity, they have been campaigning for decades against displacement and the loss of affordable housing and urban space.

Have you experienced gentrification and displacement yourself? Are you aware of change processes in your neighborhood? Are you actively involved or would you simply like to talk to others? Then you are cordially invited to take part in the exchange over coffee, cake and snacks.

Admission only with a valid ticket (free of charge). A discount is unfortunately not possible.

The event will be held mainly in German.

Moderation: Margarethe Neubauer
Discussion: Barbara Bernardi, Linda Paganelli, Vincent Voignier together with interview partners from Freifläche.

Margarethe Neubauer is a freelance journalist and works, among other things, as a reporter for Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. She reports on topics that move the region on Instagram and for the YouTube format "rbb|24 explainer". In the fall, she published her first documentary about a Jewish activist in the ARD media library. She also works as a freelance presenter.

Barbara Bernardi is an artist and filmmaker, born in Italy and based in Berlin since 2008. Her multimedia installations, poetic films and photographs create intimate and sensual landscapes that tell stories of loss, grief and migration. She collects the voices, words and memories of people that become part of her participatory works, which have been exhibited and screened throughout Europe and the USA.

Linda Paganelli is an Italian visual anthropologist, artist and filmmaker based in Berlin since 2017. With a sensory and inclusive approach and an anthropological, decolonial, queer*feminist perspective, her work touches on themes such as migration, belonging and longing, realities in (former) conflict zones, ecological mourning and the relationship between humans and other species. She collaborates with museums, galleries, universities and non-governmental organizations and is co-director of the independent Berlin Film Community.

Vincent Voignier is a photographer and artist born in France and based in Berlin since 2003. In his work, he aims to get to know communities and phenomena beyond the mainstream and to portray them visually without prejudice or stereotypes. His photo series document subcultures such as Sapeurs from Brazzaville in their homes, transgender people in Russia and the Philippines and clubbers in Berlin. He has exhibited his work in London, Berlin and St. Petersburg.
