In the cramped conditions of her parents' home, 17-year-old Marta waits for her fiancé Michele to return from the war. As a single mother, she is exposed to the contempt of her community, and when the war is over and Michele does not return, she is promised to an older farmer. During the village's marriage preparation course, she strikes up an unusual friendship with Lorenzo, the village's openly homosexual "wedding planner". Against the conservative backdrop of rural southern Italy, Lorenzo introduces her to a hidden community of gay men and ignites in Marta an indomitable desire to challenge social prejudices. In the first year of women's suffrage in Italy, Marta finds herself on a courageous journey to live her role as a confident woman, breaking barriers and finding her place in a changing world.
