My father was King David
Performance by Analog
"My father was King David" is about the Jewish family history of ensemble member Lara Pietjou, dual identities, transgenerational traumas and Jewish life in Germany. After the death of her father, Pietjou found a video interview in his estate in which her grandmother talks about the death of Lara's great-grandfather in Auschwitz and how she herself survived the Holocaust in hiding. ANALOG examines this turning point in Pietjou's biography and explores her family history using performative means. It sheds light on the transgenerational effects of her grandmother's trauma on Pietjou's father, who suffered from bipolar disorder and was convinced during manic phases that he himself was King David. The examination of the family history is also an examination of us as a society, of interfamilial taboos, of questions of belonging and identity and the diversity of Jewish life in Germany today.
The performance is accompanied by a video installation that illuminates questions of dual identity(ies) from different Jewish perspectives. Always accessible 1/2 hour before the performance begins. On 8.2.2025, the performance will be followed by a discussion with a guest (tba) over a meal with the audience.
