Meine Existenz, ein Skandal – Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde - celebrated writer, dazzling dandy and astute observer of his time. And yet his existence became a scandal. The play "My Existence, a Scandal - Oscar Wilde" tells a stylized version of the dramatic turning point in the life of the famous Irish author: from the pinnacle of Victorian society to a broken man as a result of two sensational court cases.

Two versions of Wilde meet on stage: the eloquent, fun-loving but naïve Wilde in his heyday and a marked, clearly more reflective "Old Oscar" who looks back on his life and the destructive power of a society that adored him - and then mercilessly destroyed him. Between historical drama, real newspaper quotes and trial transcripts, a tense space is created between fact and fiction, publicity and intimacy.

The play is an examination of art and morality, of the abuse of power, of appearance and reality. It shows how prejudice and hypocrisy say more about a repressive society than about the accused person and how much one can be deceived in one's own understanding of the environment and people.
