Melanie Loureiro. Die Verbundenheit der Kreaturen

In the organizer's words:

Small animals that trigger a strong attraction in the viewer*: the painter Melanie Loureiro combines them in her intense depictions of oversized plants and insects to create almost oppressive tableaux. She gives a colorful, detailed and sometimes fantastical voice to vegetation that has been silenced by monoculture and selective breeding, bringing us closer to the life and work of caterpillars, butterflies and spiders as if we were looking at them under a microscope - and getting closer to them in size. Melanie Loureiro's choice of motifs is influenced by the extinction of insects and its consequences for the ecosystem. The black swallowtail and the corresponding caterpillar appear more frequently in her pictures. This species was almost extinct in the 1980s due to the use of pesticides. The moth, whose disappearance is less obvious due to its predominantly nocturnal existence, is another of the painter's subjects.

Loureiro follows in the tradition of the scientific artists Maria Sibylla Merian and Cornelia Hesse-Honegger, among others, but Ingensiep's "History of the Plant Soul", Hugh Raffle's "Insectopedia" and Zoë Schlanger's "The Light Eaters", a currently popular work on plant intelligence, also provide inspiration for this exhibition, which aims to contribute to a better understanding of the web of life in which we are just as interwoven as animals and plants.

The artist grew up in Portugal and Germany and completed her studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Prof. Ellen Gallagher in 2022. She has long been interested in plant-insect-human communication and the effects of medicinal and poisonous plants on the body.
