In the organizer's words:

Brindsley Miller is an artist who lives in meagre circumstances. But tonight is his big chance: the Russian billionaire and art collector George Godunov, who became aware of Miller's works of art at an exhibition, has announced that he will be visiting.

His future father-in-law, retired Colonel Melkett, has also announced his visit.

Brindsley wants to impress his patron and father-in-law and "borrows" the posh furniture of his neighbor Harold Gorringe, who is away for the weekend.

But just before the visitor arrives, the power goes out. When the future father-in-law, the eccentric neighbor, the ex-girlfriend and Harold Gorringe show up one after the other, the chaos seems complete.
