Michael Krüger, the long-time director of Hanser Verlag, retired from active publishing in 2013. But this publishing legend remains active: as a poet and writer, critic, editor and translator. He has shaped German cultural life like few others, and he spent his life "among poets". He published their books with Hanser and elsewhere, printed them in the magazine Akzente, which he edited for thirty years, and was awarded the Petrarca Prize, which he founded with his friends Nicolas Born, Bazon Brock, Hubert Burda and Peter Handke. He has introduced countless readings and given hundreds of eulogies, he has traveled with the poets - and time and again he has also had to hold obituaries for his friends.
In his new book, Michael Krüger brings together an impressive selection of texts written during the course of his journey of work, poetry and life. And we can read them in amazement and be entertained at the same time.
Michael Krüger, born in 1943 in Wittgendorf/Kreis Zeitz, completed an apprenticeship as a publisher and printer. From 1962 to 1965, Michael Krüger lived as a bookseller in London, and in 1966 he began working as a literary critic. Two years later he became a publishing editor at Carl Hanser Verlag, which he took over in 1986. From 1981 he was editor of the literary magazine Akzente. In 1972 Michael Krüger published his poems for the first time, and in 1984 he made his debut as a storyteller with the volume Was tun? An old-fashioned story. This was followed by numerous other volumes of short stories, novels, editions and translations. Michael Krüger lives in Munich.
