For pianist Michael Wollny, the trio with bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Eric Schaefer is the constant in his otherwise constantly changing cosmos of collaborations. The three musicians share an almost inexhaustible musical vocabulary, an outstanding sensitivity when playing together and the ability to constantly create new music of tremendous tension and dynamism from the moment.
The band is a unity of three unmistakable characters: Michael Wollny is regarded as one of the most important European pianists of his generation. His playing blends influences from jazz, classical music, indie pop, new and early music to create an unmistakable personal style. Wollny has been playing together with drummer Eric Schaefer for more than 20 years. They share a deep intimacy and at the same time the ability to surprise and challenge each other time and again. American Tim Lefebvre forms the foundation of the trio, with a weighty tone, rock-solid groove and a fine sense of dramaturgy. Together, Wollny, Schaefer and Lefebvre create music of exuberant dynamics, boundless variety and maximum urgency. With reference to the origins of the piano trio format, the British Jazzwise Magazine writes: "The Michael Wollny Trio makes it clear that we are living in the 21st century and not in the 1960s!"
Fergus McCreadie is one of the most exciting jazz pianists on the international stage today. With a unique blend of jazz and Scottish folk music inspired by the picturesque landscapes of his homeland, his music is capturing the hearts and minds of listeners worldwide. His sound speaks far beyond the boundaries of musical genres.
His 2022 album Forest Floor, released on Edition Records, was immediately met with critical acclaim and catapulted Fergus into the international spotlight. The album topped the UK Jazz & Blues charts, sold out concerts across the UK, earned praise from BBC 6Music, The Times and NME and earned him a nomination for the Mercury Prize 2022 and the Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the Year Award 2022. He was also awarded the Scottish Album of the Year Award 2022 - the first jazz artist ever to win this award.
Fergus possesses a natural depth, exceptional style and expressiveness far beyond his years. His ability to go from a full, flowing, radiant tapestry of sound to a quiet stillness in the blink of an eye is simply breathtaking. While his music is based on the folk music traditions he grew up with, it is the versatility of rhythm and color - from the most delicate nuances to the highest energy - that is most fascinating.
Fergus has also been named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2022-24 - the only non-classical artist in the current cohort.
You always come back to the beginning the more you discover new things," says pianist Vincent Meissner. The music on his third album "Eigengrau" is characterized by a very reflective look inwards. And of very personal experiences and encounters. Together with his working trio with bassist Josef Zeimetz and drummer Henri Reichmann, Vincent Meissner has developed his own language - inspired by artists such as The Bad Plus, Esbjörn Svensson, Vijay Iyer and his mentor Michael Wollny.
"Eigengrau describes the moment of darkness behind closed eyes," explains Meissner. "But when you rub your eyes, you suddenly see patterns. Everyone sees something different, structures, objects, or perhaps nothing at all. It's similar with our music - it creates its own images for everyone."
On stage, the trio is constantly on the move, often exploding with sheer energy. In the studio, Vincent Meissner, his fellow musicians and producer Andreas Brandis search for reduction and concentration - of melodies, textures and moods. For the album, the three of them zoom in closer, every note is an exploration, every piece an interplay - finely honed and profound.
Despite its depth and complexity, "Eigengrau" is a song album. The nine highly focused tracks open up emotional spaces, each one in its own right - often pastel-colored, full of subtle shades and hypnotic appeal.
