Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), the unsuspected hero of the story, finds himself in an extraordinary situation as his employer demands the ultimate dedication to the job: Mickey earns his living by dying.

Mickey Barnes works as a so-called "expendable" on a spaceship carrying colonists to the unexplored planet Niflheim. As an Expendable, he is deployed on dangerous missions. Should he die in the process, a clone of him is simply made with the help of a bioprinter. When he falls into a crevasse while exploring the new planet, the colonialists assume he is dead and print a new version. But the original is still alive...
