miniFESPACO 2025: The African film festival brings African cinema to Mannheim from March 5 to 9 - including this Sudanese film:

Sudan, in the Sufi-influenced Al-Jazira province: When Muzamil is born, the holy man of the village prophesies that he will die at the age of 20. Muzamil's father quickly runs away and his mother raises her son overprotectively in the hope that Muzamil will be spared the prophecy by leading an exemplary life. Then he meets the old Sulaiman, who lives completely differently and breaks many taboos. Muzamil begins to doubt the prophecy that has determined his life so far - but soon he turns 20...
Director Amjad Abu Alala: "The film deals with the extent to which a strong faith can influence people's lives and how this is sometimes exploited politically. My film is an invitation for freedom." The film, staged in colorful images in the Sudanese province, has won several awards - including Best Debut Film in Venice - and was Sudan's first film in the running for an international Oscar. The director: "I wish so much for a rebirth of the Sudanese film industry. My movie is only the eighth feature-length film produced in Sudan!"
