Mitmachaktion: Sarah Waschke, Texture Embroidery, soft intentions

In the organizer's words:

The artist Sarah Waschke (@radicalcuteness) is hosting a hands-on activity as part of the exhibition soft intentions, curated by Amelie Gappa, in which visitors can help create a textile cave painting.

Using various techniques (such as embroidery, couching, beading or fabric collages), visitors will work together to create a large fabric panel that will later be used to build Sophia Schach's cave. The aim is to give shape to the emotions and use them to create a safe space (in this case: the cave). Like a soft protective shield and softness as a weapon against the patriarchy's lack of empathy.

All participants thus become part of Sophia Schach 's cave and can create a work of art within a work of art. The participatory event offers the freedom to try out textile work in an informal way and is suitable for anyone who wants to get involved and let themselves be guided by the material.

The hands-on activity takes place as part of soft intentions.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sarah Waschke (she / her) lives and works in Bonn, where she also completed her art history studies at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University. In her artistic practice, she deals with textiles as a medium - and with queerness, eroticism, softness, emotions and intimacy as a fat femme, as she describes herself. Sarah does not want to reproduce the medium of needlework as clichéd femininity, but to use it as a feminist and activist means of self-determination. In doing so, she shows her perspective on a feminine side of sex and eroticism, in which fat bodies are soft, pleasurable and sensual. The focus is also on a self-caring, feminine view - and the desire to take oneself and one's own needs seriously. In addition to exhibitions at the Bonn Women's Museum, the HKW in Berlin and Cheap Art Sensation Bonn, she has designed and led feminist workshops as part of festival programs, museums and other cultural contexts.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition is about softness in all its facets: about soft, textile materials, but also about physicality, emotionality, vulnerability, emotional labor and care work. A soft experiment, a space for action guided by tenderness, closeness and attentive togetherness. An invitation to explore the extent to which softness can also be resistant.

The exhibition builds on the artistic work We in the Cave by Cologne-based artist Sophia Schach in the cave. Wir in der Höhle is not only a walk-in installation, but also a stage for an extensive, interdisciplinary program with performances, workshops, concerts and reading sessions.

The exhibition is curated by Amelie Gappa as part of the 10th anniversary of the intersectional-feminist initiative And She Was Like: BÄM!
