Wednesday Cinema - Transcultural cultural work at the Kommunales Kino

Cinema from the Global South has been a particular focus of Kommunales Kino for over 40 years. Films that are not produced in Europe or the USA have a firm place in our program structure.

New and historical films from Africa, Asia or Latin America are shown every week in the Wednesday Cinema; the annual CineLatino festival expands this program.

These films, which are rarely shown in commercial cinemas, not only convey other aesthetic traditions and cinematic modes of presentation, but above all open up a differentiated view of other cultures. In addition, Wednesday Cinema regularly shows films that deal with cultural differences within the Western world. The focus is not only on the artistic production of migrants, but also on works by artists who express the productivity of "foreignness" - also in their own culture. We work particularly closely with a number of cultural actors from Freiburg and the surrounding area on films about migration.

Wednesday Cinema 's profile also includes topics that raise important political and social issues: Critical examination of (re)ethnicizing tendencies in intercultural cultural work, problematization of a comfortable understanding of multiculturalism as mere enrichment, questions about current identity politics, the political instrumentalization of cultural identity, but also questions about the medial and aesthetic mediation of other cultures and minorities. The aim is not only to introduce and raise awareness of foreign cultural lifestyles, but also to gain insight into the economic constraints that determine the negotiation of cultural difference worldwide and in Germany.

The Mittwochskino is characterized by a variety of collaborations (including migrant associations, iz3w, freiburg-postkolonial, E-Werk, Südwind e.V., Centre Culturel Français, University of Freiburg) and cross-media (film, literature, art, performance, music, etc.) events on specific topics. Regular invitations from international filmmakers, introductions, lectures and discussions deepen the examination of the content.
