Monty Richthofen's latest series of works explores the boundaries between language and abstraction. Drawings and paintings that incorporate fragments of text - sometimes bold and clear, sometimes illegible, hidden, blurred, sprayed over or blackened - reflect a tension between disclosure and concealment.
The paintings are an integral part of the poem "Verschluckte Kugeln", which was written by Richthofen and will be presented in a live performance as part of the opening. He will be accompanied by composer and pianist John Carlsson. The audience is invited to experience the poem as a multi-sensory experience - both through the fleeting, auditory immediacy of the live performance and through the lingering presence of his abstracted words spread across the canvases in the exhibition space.
The exhibition includes a new series of eleven text-based abstractions installed in a rhythmic sequence along the walls of the main exhibition space. Each work measures a uniform 200 x 170 cm. This is complemented by a new series of works on paper framed under tinted acrylic glass.
