Documentary film
After a fire completely destroyed Camp Moria in September 2020, it became eerily quiet. Not only on site, but also in public discourse. Neither the inhumane conditions in the other camps on Europe's external borders nor the countless pushbacks in the Mediterranean seemed to concern the general public. The arrest of the six young people accused of arson also remained without a widely audible echo - although a second look at the circumstances of the investigation and the subsequent criminal proceedings revealed the actions of the Greek judiciary to be questionable. Not to mention the underlying refugee policy of the European Union, which Jennifer Mallmann dares to take a second look at in her film. The focus is on her correspondence with Hassan, one of the convicted young people, who tells her from prison about his everyday life, his wishes and fears. Calm, precisely framed images document "normality" at the edges of Fortress Europe. They show how strategic isolation and the accompanying structural exclusion work. If you want to know how our international community imagines its future, you only have to look at the newly constructed, futuristic high-security camps. Arrivals there are treated like people who have committed serious crimes. Luc-Carolin Ziemann (Dok Leipzig)
In her film "Moria Six", director Jennifer Mallmann takes a differentiated look at the Moria refugee camp, where a devastating fire broke out in September 2020. After the destruction of the camp, the debate about the inhumane conditions at Europe's external borders and the regular pushbacks in the Mediterranean fell silent, both locally and in public discourse. The arrest of six young people accused of arson also went largely unnoticed, although the trial raised many questions. The film focuses on Mallmann's correspondence with Hassan, one of the convicted youths, who talks about his everyday life in prison. In calm, precise images, "Moria Six" addresses the mechanisms of the European policy of isolation, which treats people like criminals and locks them up in futuristic high-security camps (MFG)
The jury statement for the Defa Foundation Award at the Dokfest Leipzig reads: "A brilliant documentary that finds haunting images for the highly equipped, high-tech human management apparatus at Europe's external borders. A film that takes your breath away and makes you angry.
The jury statement for the Leipzig Ring Prize at the Dokfest Leipzig reads: "The director finds impressive images for the emptiness and incomprehensibility of the situation in Moria after the fire in the refugee camp. The film shows symbols and images of a dehumanization through technology that is receiving less and less media attention. The urgency of the film, which shows footage of pushbacks among other things, calls for action."
