Mother Tongue

In 2022, the right to decide when and how to become a mother is still a controversial issue. In many places, people are fighting for legal abortion, while in some places the law should be reversed. The discourse is polarized around birth rates that are too high or too low, artificial insemination, the legalization of surrogacy, adoption by single people and homosexual couples. Motherhood is political. Written from the stories of immigrant mothers, trans fathers, heterosexual mothers who resort to artificial insemination, gay fathers with children, women who have had abortions, women who do not want to have children.

Mother Tongue is an encyclopedia of reproduction in the twenty-first century. In a hybrid space between a library and a cabinet of curiosities, in which documents, films and music are exchanged, the performers reconstruct the past and discuss the future.
